Caergylchu, Caernarfon Waste Site Visit

  • Caernarfon, Wales, LL55 2BN United Kingdom (map)

An eye-opening insight into where our general waste and recyclables end up from Gwynedd and generally in North Wales.

The building was established in the 1970s and turned into a facility in 2007 which has meant work is not optimum with outdated equipment and space - something the council would love to upgrade but lack funding to do so.

We learnt that all general waste is sent to Energy from Waste (incineration) which happens in Deeside.
Glass gets sent to Yorkshire.
Plastic is baled and passed on to 3rd parties in England (approx 17T per week!).

One of the biggest issues they face are people incorrectly putting needles into their recycling creating a significant hazard for staff working at the site or batteries also incorrectly placed in recycling causing fires!
